Adjust Ubuntu Unity’s Settings Easily With GUnity

If you are using Ubuntu Natty, and the Unity desktop, you will surely know that there are very little configuration options available. If you wanted to make any change, your best bet is to install theCompizConfig Setting Manager and search through the vast list for the options that you want to change. If you are looking for something simpler, GUnity is the one for you.
GUnity is a third party application with various options for you to customize the Unity setting. In short, it is the Compiz Config Settings Manager specially for Unity.

1. Download the GUnity .deb file (the deb file is from a non-trusted source. Use with caution).
2. Install (double-click to install) the deb file in your Ubuntu machine.
3. Since GUnity does not add itself to the Applications Menu, the only way to launch it is to press “Alt + F2“, type “gunity” (without the quotes) and press Enter.
4. Once the app launched, you should see three tabs on the sidebar, namely Unity ShellGrab Handles and Desktop. The Unity Shell tab is where you can configure the various options of Unity, including its animation, the behavior of the launcher (to autohide or to dodge window), the launcher icon size, backlight mode, panel opacity and many more.
5. The grab handle tab is for you to set the handles shortcut key. In case you are not aware, the handles function is a new feature in Unity to help you to resize a window easily. Simply press the hotkey and you can drag the various corner to resize the window.
To configure the shortcut key, you can make use of the syntax <Control><Alt><Shift><Super> to represent the Control, Alt, Shift and Super buttons respectively. You also need to specify a single character key to complete the configuration. For example: <Control><Alt>j means Control + Alt + jbutton.
Once you have entered your shortcut key combo, remember to press “Enter” to confirm the changes, else your setting will be deleted when you close the app.
6. The desktop tab is where you can configure the number of desktop (virtual workspace) you want. You can specify the columns and rows. The default is 2 columns by 2 rows.
If you are very familiar with the Compiz Config Settings Manager, then this GUnity app is probably useless to you. However, if you just want a simple GUI to adjust all the Unity settings, then this app is the one for you.

MenuUninstaller Uninstalls Programs Right From Windows’ Context Menu

While you probably make occasional sweeps through the Add/Remove Programs dialog, it's more likely that you discover unwanted programs when you're scrolling through the Start Menu, and rarely do you want to go all the way to the Control Panel just to remove a program. MenuUninstaller adds a simple "Uninstall" option to the context menu for any shortcut on your computer, letting you uninstall a program from nearly anywhere. Just install MenuUninstaller and start removing programs—it's as simple as that.
I've found there were one or two programs it didn't work on, but most of the time if it doesn't work it'll just open up the Add/Remove Programs window for you, thus still cutting down on the number of clicks you'd need to remove a program. Usually, though, once you hit Uninstall in the context menu it'll take you straight to that program's dedicated uninstaller.
MenuUninstaller is a free download for Windows only.

Jog.fm Helps You Find Music For Your Daily Run

Research has shown that listening to music can help you run longer, keep up a healthy pace and add a few numbers to your IQ as well. Putting that information to good use, jog.fm is a web service that helps you find the right music to listen to on your daily jog or power walk. The service finds songs based on your pace (time to complete a one km run) or based on your selected bpm (beats per minute).

This playlist creator lets you create a list of songs to listen to while you run, walk and cycle. Both running and walking lists are created by entering your per kilometer time (the time it takes to complete a km run/walk) while cycling lists are created from your rotations per minute. You can play the songs directly from jog.fm (which uses Grooveshark). Songs can be downloaded from iTunes or AmazonMP3.
Multiple lists can be created for running, walking or cycling for varying paces. The service also let you create routes using Google Maps by placing start and end markers. You can save multiple routes to your account.
Jog.fm gives you access to playlists made by a community of runners, walkers and cyclists. You can create your own lists or benefit from the selection of others.

Txtot Reminds SMS Text Messaging Sending On iOS Devices

Occasionally, you may experience the difficulty to remember and tend to forget to send text messaging which could be important and if you wonder how you can get around with this, here is a simple app which was released recently to serve as reminder. Named as Txtot, or Text on time, it allows users to schedule a reminder so that the SMS text messaging can be sent without miss at a predefined time just like I do for wishing people their birthdays.
Being designed with a simple interface, users will no longer need to set a separate reminder and within the text messaging interface itself, there is a new field that users can enter the date and time on when the message is intended to be sent. Once set, the timer will start counting and when it reaches the specific time, it will prompt up a reminder asking for users’ confirmation if they still want to send the text message. If the answer is yes, simply press on the button will bring up the pre-configured messages in native iphone message.app ready to be sent.
Txtot is free for download from App Store and the only pre-requisite is it needs iPhone 4.2 firmware update for the app to work correctly.

How to Install Mac OS X Snow Leopard in VirtualBox

If you need to test a software on Mac OSX, and it is not justifiable for you to get a new Macbook, a good way is to install the Mac OSX as a virtual machine in your Windows (or Linux) based PC. Both the two popular virtual machine software – Virtualbox and VMware, support Mac OSX installation as a virtual guest, but in this article, we will deal with Virtualbox.

Why Virtualbox?

You may be wondering why you should choose VirtualBox instead of using VMware. Well, for one reason – you will save yourself a good bit of cash, since VMware can costs you a pretty penny, and VirtualBox is a free solution. Of course, free is not enough to make a product worth your while. It needs to have other traits, such as stability and a development team that support it with regular updates. VirtualBox provides you with both of these things, so you can use it with confidence that you will not end up with problems a year down the line.

What Do You Need On Your System

In order for this system to work, you need to have a setup that has either an Intel or AMD processor that is capable of supporting hardware virtualization.

What You Need to Do

First off, if you have not installed VirtualBox, now would be a really good time to get it. Go to Virtualbox website and download the installer for your OS. If you do not own a Snow Leopard disc, you might want to search for a OSX86 iso file and download it.
Step 1: Open the VirtualBox software and click the “New” button. This will launch the ”create a new VM” wizard tool which is designed to walk you through the setup.
Step 2: Give your new VM a name (I named it Mac OSX). Choose “Mac OS X” in the “Operating System” dropdown menu, and then select “Mac OS X Server” from Version dropdown menu, which you will find in the same area.
Step 3: Assign the amount of memory you want to allocate to the new operating system. The maximum in VirtualBox is 1500MB, but you will want to temper this figure based on what you need to do with the system, how much memory you have in total on the system, and the types of programs you intend to install on under the new OS.
Step 4: Make a new hard drive for your VM. If you are not sure how much you need, choose the “Dynamic” option. This will allow the system to expand as your needs do. If you choose the “Static” option, be sure that you know what you need and allot accordingly. Then click on “Next” to finish up with the wizard.

Step 5: Click on “Settings” and then “System”. Uncheck the box next to the words “Enable EFI (special OSes only)”.

Step 6: Choose “Storage” from the menu on the left and choose the word “Empty”, you will see it under the OSX.vdi. You will see a folder with a green arrow. Click on it and a new window will open. Click on the plus sign. You will now be able to find the OSX86 iso that you downloaded earlier in this process. Once you have highlighted it, click on the “Select” button and then click on “OK”. Finally, click on the main start button to begin the process.
Step 7: When all of this is done the VM should start booting. You will be asked to select a language. Do that and click on “Next” then “Continue and Agree”. The next screen will show you the words choose the 20GB VBOX HARDDISK, and click on the “Erase” button.
Step 8: Click on “Install” to begin your installation. When the installation is done click the Right-Ctrl key and unmount the CD/DVD drive for now. Then restart the VM. OSX should begin to boot.
There you have it Mac OS X Snow Leopard running in VirtualBox on your Windows-based machine.

Google Announces Google Wallet [NEWS]

Google today announced and demoed Google Wallet, an app that turns your phone into your wallet. The company has partner with Citi, MasterCard, First Data, and Sprint to make it possible for you to tap, pay, and save using your phone with Near Field Communication (NFC).
Google says it is building an open commerce ecosystem, and will develop APIs to enable integration with numerous partners. Unfortunately, Google Wallet is only initially compatible with the Nexus S 4G on Sprint. The search giant does not have a release date for Google Wallet other than “soon.”
Although we’ve known Google has been interested in NFC technology for a long time now, it was confirmed with the release of Android 2.3 (codenamed Gingerbread) late last year. Solid details around Google’s mobile payment platformleaked two months ago, and now it’s finally official.
Google Wallet is supposed to make it easier for consumers to pay for and save on the goods they want, while giving merchants more ways to offer coupons and loyalty programs to their customers. Oh, and Google also claims it bridges the gap between online and offline commerce.
At first, Google Wallet will only support Citi MasterCard and a Google Prepaid Card, which you’ll be able to fund with another payment card. This means you’ll be able to tap your phone to pay wherever MasterCard PayPass is accepted. Google Wallet will also sync your Google Offers, which you’ll be able to redeem via NFC at participating SingleTap merchants, or by showing the barcode as you check out.
The mobile app will be able to store your credit cards, offers, loyalty cards, and gift cards, without the bulk or additional weight. When you tap to pay, your phone will also automatically redeem offers and earn loyalty points for you. Google hopes the app will one day store things like boarding passes, tickets, ID, and keys.

A FREE Online Radio Player with Album Art

My “go to” online internet radio source is RadioTuna. It has been my favorite for nearly a year and half. As a matter of fact I did a blog post on Radio Tuna back in January 2010.
I recently noticed that RadioTuna now has a desktop player, called RadioTuna Player that is available as a download and install on your PC.  The player eliminates the need to open your web browser and go to the RadioTuna site to play your music.
The player is pretty simple to use and has the following key features:
  • Browse Over 300+ genres
  • Save Preset Stations
  • Hotkey Support
  • Album Art

RadioTuna also has a FREE radio widget that can be embedded on your website or blog.

Edit Hosts File in Windows 7 XP to Block Websites

Blocking Websites With the Hosts File
A lot of software cracks will usually allow you to run an application which edits your hosts file, usually in an effort to block your computer from accessing the software’s registry server. However, many of these hosts-patching programs have problems or downright fail at editing the hosts file for certain Windows operating systems. The good news is you can patch the hosts file yourself, as long as you know the URL of the site you wish to block or redirect.
Editing the Hosts File (Windows 7)
  1. Click on the Start (Windows) button
  2. Click on Computer
  3. Navigate through Windows Explorer through the following folders:
    1. C:/
    2. Windows/
    3. System32/
    4. drivers/
    5. etc
  4. In “etc” folder, select the hosts file and copy and paste it to your desktop.
  5. Double click on the hosts file in your desktop
    1. Select to open it through Notepad
  6. Make edits to it in Notepad
  7. Save using Ctrl+S
  8. Drag and drop the hosts file back into the “etc” folder
  9. Select “move and replace file” to overwrite the original file
Your hosts file should look something like this:
Blocking Websites
To block a website, you simply add the following to the bottom of the hosts file in Notepad:
127.0.0.1    siteyouwantblocked.com
So if I wanted to block MySpace, I would type:
127.0.0.1    myspace.com
And then I would get this if I typed myspace.com into a browser:
You can patch your hosts file for entirely legal reasons too. Many people will edit their hosts file to block bad or unwanted websites that could harm their computer.
However, be sure, if using one of these lists of designed to patch your host file, that all the websites are preceded with the code: 127.0.0.1. That’s an IP address that defaults to nowhere. Just a blank page. If there is any other IP address in the code, don’t trust it. It could be redirecting you to bad sites filled with viruses and terrible things for your computer.

Apple Filming An iPhone 5 Commercial..?

One of the factors that points to an imminent release of a product is when ads for it are being made. An alleged post on Craigslist regarding a cast call for an "iPhone 5" ad was posted and pulled within two hours, but thankfully still indexed by a few search engines and screen captured by some users. Is a new iPhone imminent?

While the listing does not provide specific information about the product, it asks for a cast of 5 people, both male and female actors of different ethnicities and ages. That’s it, an incredibly standard ad.
The only eye-catching part of this offer is that customers will be paid in British Pounds, even though the ad will allegedly be taped in Los Angeles. That can be explained by the fact the company responsible for the commercial might be based in Britain. About one month ago, a similar ad ran on the New York Times, although the product was only identified as an "iPhone", not an "iPhone 5", but the production company was the well-known British Tiger Effects:
Commercial Casting Notice for Apple iPhone:
Location: NY
Employer: TIGER PRODUCTIONS
Duration: 1 DAY, starts MAY 4TH.
(Non-Union artist contracts)
Director: H. GOLAN
ROLE: family oriented happy, male and female
AGE: 18-50 – huge range
RATE: $3000 +10%
Of course, this could simply be a plain and simple hoax, considering how rumors have suggested a future iPhone would still be months away and how many are starting to believe there won’t be an iPhone 5 this year, only a smaller upgrade dubbed the "4S". Yet, "
iPhone 5" could be a standard designation for a future iPhone device, and not necessarily a big revamp.

Apple is known to hire outside production companies to tape ads shortly before product launches. Last year, there was a cast call for FaceTime and the then-unreleased iPhone 4. A taping so early could point to an announcement around the WWDC time frame, which is set to start on June 6th, although nothing’s certain at this point.
Rumors of a future iPhone have been ongoing for the last few months. Enhancements will likely include a faster processor and an 8-megapixel camera, unlike the current iPhone 4′s 5-megapixel one. Earlier this week, analleged photo of the a next-generation iPhone’s back plate was released. It looks similar to the one found on the iPhone 4, aside from the positioning of the camera.
Whether there will be an "iPhone 5" or not is up in the air. Vague information on an alleged Craigslist ad will only fill a small piece of the puzzle.

Skype Down and Causes Client App Crash (Stopped Working)

Skype has been in the news lately for acquisition by Microsoft at astronomical price. Some has said Microsoft will ruin Skype, and the proof seems coming too soon. Skype is now currently down for a major outage for quite a number of Skype users, especially users who are about to log into the Skype. To make matter worse, upon launching and attempting to sign into Skype client, the application automatically shut itself down, with error message “Skype has stopped working,” caused by unknown problem.

The issue seemed to affect Skype users worldwide randomly regardless of platform. Windows, Mac OS X and Linux Skype clients all seem unable to login to Skype network. In Windows, the Skype program will stop responding, and auto close itself, giving an impression that you may need to reinstall Skype.
But when you attempt to download the setup installer of Skype, the Skype website appears to be down as well, or taken a very long time to load, or display error message saying “Hi – Our server has taken a short break.”
If you still stayed logged into Skype, apparently you not spare from the issue too. It’s reported Skype users have intermittent issue when making voice or video calls. In addition, the status of contacts apparently are not updated too. It means that people who are affected and unable to sign in or those who just logout still appears as online.
Skype apparently is aware of the problem and has tweeted the following:
Some of you may have problems signing in to Skype and making calls. We’re investigating and hope to have more details to share soon.
Despite the Microsoft Windows error message is saying that Windows will notify you if a solution is available, but don’t hope much. It’s probably better to follow @Skype for notification when the telephony service is up again. It’s almost an hour since incidents started to be reported, yet no cause and solution is found yet.
For thousands of people worldwide affected by Skype outage, the only thing can do for now is wait, and pray that union with Microsoft does not mean bad luck for Skype.
Update: Skype has posted a new tweet stating that “thanks for your patience – we’ve identified the problem and will be rolling out a fix soon.” If you can’t wait, there is report that the skype will work if you delete the following file \Users\%UserName%\AppData\Roaming\Skype\shared.xml (in Windows 7 or Vista), \Documents and Settings\%UserName%\Application Data (in Windows XP) or~/Library/Application Support/Skype/shared.xml (in Mac OS X).
Skype has made the above workaround official at Skype blog. Here’s the detailed step-by-step guide:
Windows Vista and Windows 7
  1. Close Skype.
    1. Right-click the Skype icon in the system tray (at the bottom right of the screen)
    2. Choose Quit.
  2. Ensure that “Show hidden files and folders” is switched on.
    1. Click Start, type run and press Enter.
    2. Type control folders and click OK.
    3. Select the View tab and ensure relevant entry is enabled.
  3. Locate the shared.xml file.
    1. Click Start, type run and press Enter.
    2. Type %appdata%\skype and click OK.
    3. Delete the shared.xml file.
  4. Restart Skype. The shared.xml file will be recreated.
Windows XP
  1. Close Skype.
    1. Right-click the Skype icon in the system tray (at the bottom right of the screen)
    2. Choose Quit.
  2. Ensure that “Show hidden files and folders” is switched on.
    1. Click Start and then Run….
Mac OS X
  1. Quit Skype.
  2. Go to the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Skype/
  3. Delete the file shared.xml (it will be recreated once you open Skype again, this is fine).
  4. Start Skype.
Anyway, lucky Skype users who are still able to login to Skype network, just DO NOT sign out or restart your computer, if you don’t want to have your Skype app crashes, for now.

Soluto Can Now Identify And Resolve Program Crashes

Finding application crash events from Windows logs is one of the most tedious task, as it’s often required to search through Windows Event Viewer and to find specific applications processes with data & time stamps in Windows ever growing log files. So what is the best way to view and analyze application crash reports? An ingeniously simple yet intuitive mechanism is provided by previously featured Soluto, which was formerly only a system boot time optimizer. Recently, Soluto has reached a significant milestone. The latest update offers a solution to not only view application crash reports but lets you analyze the program crashes and fix them easily.
Soluto has also been augmented with a capability to find pre and post Soluto installation program freezes and crashes. It can also suggest which browsers extensions can be safely removed from the system. It doesn’t matter how many browsers you are using, it lists down all of them with installed add-ons, letting you quickly disable them to reduce browser load time and to enhance overall browser usage.
Along with system boot time analysis, both Lighten Web Browser and Heal Crashes features are listed on the main interface. Soluto requires a reboot after installation to generate pre-Soluto program crash reports and to identify installed browser extensions. After reboot, it calculates total boot time your PC took and shows main interface to view program crash statistics.
The Lighten Web Browser section shows all installed browsers. Select any browser to view all installed extensions. The Disable button is present right underneath each listed extension, which when clicked will disable the extension right away. The disabled add-ons stack is present at right side. A click on stack will reveal them, allowing you to quickly enable selected add-ons.
The Heal Crash section shows extensive information regarding previously crashed applications whilst crash timeline plotted on graph exhibits number of crashes reported since last two months.
Hovering the mouse over an application which got crashed will reveal further details. It shows statistics of crashed application and suggests you solutions if available.
Furthermore, Soluto also replaces Windows default program crash view report that allows you to send report to Microsoft with its own crash handler. Soluto Crash Handler tries to find the possible solution for the crash and recommend workarounds to either identify the root cause or to resolve the problem(s) permanently.

Antennagate Returns On iPad 2 [VIDEO]

Oh Apple, how do you keep getting yourself into these messes? Remember the seemingly never-ending palaver that was Antennagate? That’s right, the one that got so out of hand Apple saw fit to hold a special press eventand then give away millions of rubber bands iPhone bumpers? Well, if reports coming out of AppAdvice is to be believed, then the Cupertino peeps could be in for another tough ride with people beginning to complain of Wi-Fi connectivity issues when iPad 2s are held just so.

AppAdvice kicked the ball off when one of their readers shared his thoughts on what appears to be an issue with Wi-Fi performance when an iPad 2 is held near its single speaker grill.

Seems the iPad 2 has antenna gate also, I have noticed this for awhile. If I hold the iPad 2 on the sides my Wi-Fi drops to 2 bars but when I move my hand away from the left side it speeds up again. I guess if I bought a case for it that would make it go away. Has anyone else said anything about this?

What RazorianFly found was that this isn’t an isolated issue, with reports coming from a thread on the MacRumors Forums that similar issues are cropping up for others. Not only were users able to cause a drop in bars, some even managed to kill connectivity completely.

What’s particularly strange about this is the reports we’ve had since the first iPad’s release that the hardware’s antennas are actually hidden behind that iconic Apple logo on the device’s rear. This obviously begs the question of why does holding an iPad at its base affect the performance of its Wi-Fi antenna?

Apple is no stranger to antenna issues. Its iPhone 4 suffered the original Antennagate controversy last year when eager punters bought the brand new handset and discovered it was possible to reduce the number of reported reception bars by holding the phone a particular way. Media coverage was so intense Apple in the end had to offer free bumpers to help negate the issue of bridging antennas with fleshy palms.

It’s early days with this new bout of antenna issues, but Apple will no doubt be hoping they aren’t in for another round of bar related hysteria.

15 Reasons Why My Android is Far More Better Than iPhone

When someone gets an Android powered mobile, everyone was “Dude, why did you leave an opportunity of getting an iPhone, if you were getting?” And here are some reasons why you shoud go for an Android device and why I recommend it:

Reasons I Prefer Android than iPhone:
  1. Android has flash support available, where iPhone doesn’t. Though iPhone has HTML 5, but what dude? Even Android has!
  2. You can customize the home screen as you want it to look like, but in iPhone you cannot. :/
  3. Alternative keyboards can be used in Android, but you can’t find any for iPhone.
  4. You can install applications without the Android market in Android, but without App Store, you can’t in iPhone.
  5. Android files can be edited and that’s legal, but iPhone’s cannot and it’s illegal
  6. You can install apps wirelessly in Android, but can’t in iPhone.
  7. You gotta unlock the iPhone before using, but in Android you don’t need to.
  8. Android mobiles are hellot cheaper than iPhones, and also with same features and applications.
  9. You can change/remove an Android powered device’s battery, but can’t iPhone’s.
  10. Home screen can be settled up with lots of Widgets available, but not iPhone’s.
  11. You can even control an Android from your Computer, but iPhone you cannot.
  12. Google love will be only found in Android, though most of the Google Apps are available for iPhone, but Apps of the same manufacture, whose operating system is won’t make a perfect combination?
  13. iPhone has many bugs as compared to Android. Though these days even Android viruses are out.
  14. Upgrading an Android is too easy as compared to iPhone Jailbreaked OS upgrading.
  15. Got an Android device? Now you tell what should be 15th reason? :P
